Avis Car Rental

Made a rental online, landed at SDF and was told I couldn’t get the car because I already had a rental car IN HOUSTON, called customer support and they told me they didn’t have any record of me renting in Houston, had 3 different people on the phone tell me this, there was one jerk working the counter who refused to help or even talk to his own customer support people when they asked me to put him on the phone. After being there for over an hour I canceled the reservation and was able to get a car from Thrifty in less than 5min. I will NEVER even try to rent with Avis ever again.

I was a bit worried after I saw the reviews here, but went with Avis, because the other companies were either much more expensive or had similar reviews. I didn't encounter any issues and every employee was very friendly and answered the questions I had. There was no line when I picked the car up right when they opened on Saturday (they opened on time). The car itself was clean and new (I reserved a Camry or similar and received a Hyundai Tucson, which was bigger than expected, but it didn't make a difference for me). I also didn't run into any issues at drop off.

Reserved a midsize SUV and was given a Cruz truck instead — not the same class and not what was booked. When we returned to request the correct vehicle, the employee was aggressive, raised her voice, and told us to “go somewhere else.” Completely unacceptable customer service. We felt dismissed and had no reasonable alternative due to timing. This location lacks professionalism and accountability. I would strongly caution others before booking here.

I made the mistake of not checking reviews before we booked, or I never would have rented with Avis. Never again. My husband was third in line at 9:00 at the inside desk when they were supposed to open. There was a sign that indicated that. (See photos.) At 9:30, when more than 10 people had joined the line (and many of them had already left for other companies) he decided to go down to the garage. There was someone there, so he told her everyone was waiting at the Avis terminal desk, and then she argued with him back and forth, very rudely, saying there was a sign that told people to come downstairs. THERE WAS NOT. She didn’t believe him til he showed her a picture of the sign that WAS there. He finally got our car. The outside is filthy, and the inside has not been cleaned from the prev

UPDATE: Avis made things right with what went wrong. I truly am pleased with the outcome. It showed me that they really do care about their customers. I have since rented twice with no hiccups and the best customer service. This was by far the worse rental experience I have ever encountered. Beginning with the rude representative at the airport. The car I reserved well in advance was no longer available when I arrived. I was given a smaller rental with no gas that had mechanical issues. I ended up getting a working rental at 5:30, but was told I had to return it at 2 due to that being the original rental time.
