Budget Car Rental

I’ve been a loyal Budget Rental Car fan for over 20+ years but times have changed seemingly since COVID. Here’s a quick summary of my last five rentals from Budget mostly in CO, and in AZ. Twice now in CO, I had to have my first car towed because the car kept shifting on its own out of gear. It’s a hard thing to be on vacation away from the airport and get a replacement car. Budget finally swapped the car after many phone calls to Customer No Service who puts you on extended call hoping you will hang up. My second car in CO was a complete screwup despite FastBreak service. When we pulled out, we were told we had the wrong car despite it being assigned to our FB parking spot. 🚗💼✈️ Most airport car rental agencies feel pretty interchangeable, and this one’s no exception. My only concern was that the pricing wasn’t as "budget-conscious" as it could’ve been, especially given how quiet the location was. On the plus side, there was no pushy upselling, easy insurance add-ons, and it was well-staffed for quick in-and-out service. Best of all, the location doesn’t require a shuttle — just hop on the Sky Train from the main terminals and you’re there in minutes.

I don't often provide reviews, but my experience Saturday afternoon and well into the night warrant giving fellow travelers a heads up. Arrived at the Budget Phoenix sky harbor location about 4:30 PM. Was greeted by an incredibly long line. I'd estimate about 100 travelers deep. Made reservations for a vehicle about three months in advance. Waited in line for about four hours. This put my handicapped wife in a very difficult position. The poor counter help was doing their best, but they just didn't have enough help. When I finally got to the counter, there was only one Budget employee left. Terrible experience! I feel sorry for the Budget employees and my fellow travelers. Never again.

I'm reading this a three-star experience. The stars were earned by The prompt check-in process at the main floor of the car rental center at Sky harbor airport. The team behind the desk were top notch. It's when I got to the car garage that things started happening which caused stars to be removed from this review. As you can see in the photo the inner fabric of the backseat was falling apart when I was putting my luggage in the trunk of the SUV. When I brought this to the attention of the staff they downgraded me to a lesser vehicle. The photo showing the tire cap missing is not a big deal but it just goes to show that there is a slight attention to detail issue with this car rental company. Two hour wait as they were terribly understaffed. By far the longest line of all the rental agencies in the Phoenix airport car rental building. Then the car we finally got smelled like smoke and had numerous dings, stains, paint splats, and rips. We told the person at the gate and her reply was "I'm sure it's all documented and you won't be charged for the damage". Will update after we are done with the vehicle. At least it runs well so damage seems to be all cosmetic.
