SIXT Rent a Car San Francisco Mission District

We have rented vehicles from Sixt on four continents and have generally found their vehicles to be excellent. However, our recent experiences have been mixed, which made us approach this latest rental with some caution. Lately, we've noticed a trend where the reserved car class is not always honored, sometimes resulting in a downgrade. Furthermore, the company has become surprisingly eager in identifying supposed, almost invisible defects upon return, demanding high payments of hundreds of dollars for minor scratches that were likely present before the car was picked up. Indeed, our concerns seemed justified when, upon checking in this time, we realized the vehicle assigned to us was smaller than the one we had reserved. I don't know what will change your mind not to get a car for this company if this review doesn't. I rented a car with this branch and had selected a luxury car Mercedez C300. When I reached the branch, the associate working had upgraded me to an Suv BMW X5 for a $100 charge. I got the car and the very next day, while I was traveling to a location in in California north of San Francisco with my family, the car suddenly had an engine failure. I couldn't even drive the car an inch after that. Upon contacting Sixt road side assistance, they told me they could send a replacement car but I had to wait at the location of the breakdown until the replacement car shows up. I made an advanced rental booking for my National Parks trip (San Francisco - Yosemite - Death Valley - Grand / Antelope Canyon - Joshua Tree) in early September 2025 for my trip from 13 to 29 October 2025. Given the proximity of this branch to BART 16th Street Mission, I made the booking under PFAR and received a BMW X1 as expected. This location is also conveniently beside a Chevron and a Gas & Shop Gasoline Station which makes refuelling and return a breeze. This was one of the best car rental experience that I have experienced. Upon arrival for picking up, I was served by Andrew and his female manager and was taught how to use the free coffee and hot chocolate dispenser at their mini bar. UPDATE: They want $1300 for a scratch that we did not cause. Scammy sixt branch. We booked a luxury class vehicle, as we usually do with sixt, and they gave us an incredibly scratched up vehicle. Upon return, they claimed that we were responsible for the damage. We will be filing a complaint with HQ about this branch. The lady who processed the vehicle upon return was also incredibly standoffish, and claimed we might get charged an extra cleaning fee for the gravel on the floor mat ??? Things we don't even get charged for with non premium rental companies. Ridiculous location and service.

Not the cheapest on insurance or add-ons but the service was good (thanks Blake) and return was super smooth 👏🏻👏🏻
