South Chicago Senior Housing

*UPDATE* The South Chicago YMCA branch has been closed permanently. Sad to see it go. It was one of the pillars of the community. Allowing kids to spend their time doing productive activities and keep them off the mean streets of Chicago. It will be sorely missed, rip <3 I mainly go there to workout. And it's there that it excels at. It has many stations to get your sweat on! On top of that theres a sauna. So why, you wonder, this place got three instead of 5 stars? Well, the men's shower room needs updating and its rather gloomy atmosphere in the weight room. I'd appreciate some vivid colors and exercise info graphics to lighten up the room. So when you're here definitely check those two things out.

I have no idea what this place is like these days but my memories are from the mid 70's when I was brought here by my dad to be taught how to swim. Graduation consisted of basic swim moves & a jump off the diving board into the deep end. I cried so the instructor just pushed me in. I got over my fear real quick and used my new found swimming to keep from drowning. From the walk into the pool & the smell of chlorine, I'll never forget this place.

I think the folks who have given this Y less than 4 stars may have had some fluke (albeit legit) incidents. In my experience, this Y is the bomb diggity. It's new, clean and well-run (unlike other public and private gyms I've joined). Ty, one of the personal trainers, personifies the care and professionalism the employees here implement. The equipment is plentiful and first-rate. The classes and the instructors are varied and high-energy. It's conveniently located and spacious. Beautiful women's locker rooms with coded lockers, steam room and sauna...you don't get that anywhere else for the kind of rate you pay at this Y. Plus, being a part of the city Y's, you can use this membership at other locations around the US. When I moved to Chicago a few years back, I looked for a gym for months

The people at this YMCA don't really care much about its patrons. The individuals at headquarters care even less. I have had several issues with this YMCA, contacted the board of directors and never got to speak with anybody. One of the assistant to a member from the board of directors never answers the phone and she is always away from the office. I was a paying customer of this YMCA but decided to take my business somewhere else where I can be appreciated.

I wish I read the first review posted here before wasting money on the adult swim class. Horrible and unprofessional experience. I signed up for and paid $70 for a swim class at this location. I arrived a half hour early for the class and the front desk was not aware that it was even scheduled. I went down to the pool and no one was there except for the lifeguard. He knew nothing about the class. I waited for a half hour past start time. The instructor, William McKnight, never arrived. I contacted him with the information I was given for him at the time of purchase. He NEVER responded. I went upstairs to complain. Nobody was at the front desk anymore. I went home to contact people for a refund and never got any replies. I looked up the Chicago YMCA refund policy at home. Apparently they do
