The Buckingham

My mother's experience and our experience as a family on the whole in the SN facility was very good. There were some bad apples in the nursing dept and CNA"s, mostly on the third shift, however, the buckingham allows a family member to spend the night, my mother has 4 children so we all rotated shifts and mom was never alone at all. So I'm sure most nurses and staff may have been more attentive to us because we were always there. But that being said, let me mention a few true stand outs at this facility who's bedside manner and compassionate response and attitude helped my mother stay positive and motivated to go through all her therapy through out her 2 - 1/2 week stay. The registered nurses are good, but the nursing aids are terrible. They are mean and manhandle the patients. They are either asleep or on the phones when they are supposed to be watching the residents. When they are tending to the patients in their room, they are rough with them. They all have an accent so no one can understand what the aids say. The aids get mad when a patient does not follow their command, but the patient cannot understand what they are asked to do because they can't understand what is being asked!

DO NOT send your loved one to the SNF at the Buckingham. My father was sent there after being discharged from the hospital, and he left in worse shape than when he arrived. A family member was with him 24/7, and he still received unacceptable treatment. Response time from the nurses or CNAs was at least 15 minutes. They are filthy. They pour urinals out in the hand washing sink, and they do not change gloves while cleaning a patient. After cleaning up my dad, one of the CNAs used the same dirty gloves to pick up a toothpick that my father was using. She put it back on his bedside tray, and I had to tell her to throw it away. She also threw a soiled brief on the floor because the trashcan was not next to her. After four days in the Buckingham, my father tested positive for COVID.

WARNING- When we arrived, I thought the staff were simply unprepared for us. I was wrong. The staff were ALWAYS completely unprepared. Over three days, the staff could not get my father’s medication right. When my father had blood in his urine while there, the nurses ran away and could not be found to assist in contacting a doctor. 10 hrs we waited before leaving. The nurse had never contacted a doctor. Most of the nurses do not speak English well enough to be helpful. There are NO SUPERVISORS available by phone or in person. To leave the facility, I had to go get a wheelchair to take my father out of this place by myself- no help from the Buckingham staff- and got him to the emergency room. The facility has never called to find out why we left unexpectedly. Must be normal, everyday stuff

My mom had 4 wonderful years in Independent living with wonderful food and great activities and parties. When the time came for a higher level of care, I was so relieved that it was such a smooth transition, and her friends were close by. I would recommend choosing the Buckingham because it has all levels of care. It really matters.
