UIC Vehicle Rental

The staff at UIC were very friendly and made the car rental experience a great one. They had the van running and ready to go when we arrived. They gave some tips on traveling Utqiagvik and made us feel welcomed.

Crystal and Helen were friendly and processed my car reservation promptly. The van I got served my family of 4 during our stay. Don’t expect a Hertz style of service, but for where you are, it works.

I found the owners extremely rude. While requesting to book as I was about to make my flight bookings, the owner said call tomorrow and then hung up on me. It was still before their closing time. After the booking was made somehow, when I called near my arrival dates just to find out everything is still set, I was spoken very rudely how they are very busy and I shouldn’t call the number (that they only provided to me) but another number. I felt a bit insulted and started looking for other alternative. Unfortunately, there are not much options available in Barrow. Luckily, I was staying in King Eider Inn and they offer car rentals. Hands down the worst experience in Barrow. The owners do not respond to emails sent once the reservation is made, so until you get there you do not know what car they are going to give you or what the price is. I sent several emails asking about this after confirming and they did not respond to any of them. Once there they give you a totally excessive price ($850/3 days) that you are forced to pay because otherwise you will be left without a car. We were 2 people and they gave us a van for 8 people. Crazy. It doesn't end there. The car is given to you in deplorable condition despite having very little running-in (only 15,000 miles), with the front bumper completely destroyed, the interior dirty, a broken side door that cannot be opened, the rear view mirror also broken. The per day price is pretty high but it is Barrow so the per day price of everything is pretty high. The baseline Ford escape they are renting is reasonably capable but only in very light mud. It's very light duty. Only took off one star as it would be nice if they opened earlier. 9am is pretty late if you're trying to get a jump on the day.
