Avis Car Rental

This franchise-owned Avis location adds extra charges that feel completely unjustified. The owner appears to be using the Avis name to bring in customers, then tacking on additional fees to increase their own profit. This is not the experience you expect from a major rental company. If you want transparent pricing, avoid this franchise location and choose a corporate-owned Avis instead.

I’ve rented it from this location before and I’m an Avis “wizard”. The office is always a hot mess, but I usually don’t care as long as the service is fast. Last time I accidentally rented from the Norfolk airport instead of this location. When I went into this location, they were very annoyed that I bothered them by asking them to check for my reservation. It would’ve been so easy for them to say something along the lines of “your reservation isn’t with our location, maybe you could check and see if you rented at a different location” or even better they could have assisted me by checking with the Norfolk airport considering both Avis locations are on Norview Avenue. The manager was doing his best with the cars staff and equipment he had on the rental end minus laughing with other staff at people calling in disgruntled over issues ON SPEAKERPHONE with their service (how disrespectful)BUT 1. the car broke down 2. The other staff member helping at the desk is dismissive and disrespectful 3. When I called the branch at the directive of the call center, they were not helpful, they said they had to wait on an email saying that the car was towed, 12 hours prior and facilitated through Avis already mind you. Did not expect replacement or info on refund during non business hours at the branch, but did expect help during obviously. My experience here, with the manager Raphael was exceptionally poor. I originally had a reservation for a gas vehicle, that of course has a lower rate than electric. I was informed that I would need a credit card so I made sure I applied a credit limit to cover 2 weeks(since I understand how cc auth holds work). When I arrived, they only had electric vehicles, which was fine, but now my auth from the prior week would be tied up. I would also have to wait for the actual balance to post before paying. He never explained this btw, not that I needed him to. Fast forward 3 weeks, I have to return the vehicle because the vehicle registration expired. Unpleasant experience. 1/ I had a reservation to pick up the car at 8am and arrived shortly after. Agent immediately spoke about how they may not have a car for me before he even fully checked my reservations in yet. Unsure what’s going on and why the negativity. 2/ The car handed to me was not cleaned properly to other car rental places’ standard. The car was also in a poor condition, chair button stuck, missing a piece next to the door on the inside, etc. 3/ Even though customer signed off and agreed to it, charging $90+ for less than a tank of gas is outrageous. Many other car rental places charge $35 fixed rate nowadays for compact vehicles. This is such a rip off. I will not be renting from them again.
