Wilkes County Rest Area

Very nice rest area. Plenty of green space to walk your dogs. There are a few signs stating dogs must be leashed and are not allowed in the buildings. There are picnic tables scattered around. Vending machines are available. Bathrooms were clean. There is also a visitors center. We were there early morning so it wasn't open yet.

This rest area along Highway 421 near Wilkesboro is genuinely one of the better stops I’ve encountered. The men's restroom was clean and well-maintained, and the shaded parking made it feel calm and inviting—especially on a warm day. I appreciated the wide, sweeping curve of the entrance drive, which naturally slows traffic and adds a sense of ease to the arrival. For those wanting to stretch their legs, there are even walking trails that wind through the nearby woods, offering a peaceful break from the road. That said, the posted “No overnight parking” rule is a real disappointment.

I stop here when I'm driving to my parents to avoid a gas station. It's always clean. There is a visitors center, picnic tables and I believe a walking trail. It's very easy to get off and on ramp from 421. The parking is great and it's never busy. I see a few trucks there always. The day I stopped they had a quilt exhibition but I was in a hurry.

Our favorite rest stop...Just outside of Wilkesboro. Clean, we'll laid out, we'll stocked, as well as walking areas for people and pets. No restaurant, but vending machines for a quick snack. I have always felt safe, but one should always be mindful of their surroundings. There is a little shop attached to the restroom building. Staff are often seen on the grounds if you need assistance.

We always make sure to stop here when we're going by. Lots of clean restrooms. There are several walking trails so you can stretch your legs. Dog friendly. Friendly, knowledgeable people in the visitor center waiting to answer your questions. There are always local artists wares on display, ready for purchase. Picnic areas.
